1. Why and who should I attract?

Much like dating, business is all about trying to attract the perfect partner, or in this case, customer. You need to woo your customer into choosing you out of all the competition; you need to stand out from the crowd—and this can start with the logo.

Your logo should be able to communicate what your business stands for as well as appeal to those you are trying to attract. Carefully think about what you believe your target market will be looking for in a logo. For example, if you want to brand your dog-walking business, using a cat in your logo design is a bad idea.

    Brainstorm

One of the simplest yet most effective ways to find inspiration is to write down your ideas. Start by answering some simple questions:

    "What makes our business special?"

"Why did we start this business?"

    "What are our core values?"

"How would you describe your brand?"

"What images do you associate with your brand, product, or service?"

Answering these questions and having them physically in front of you will help get your creative juices flowing and help you streamline what you want to achieve through your logo.

    Examine the competition.

Of course, we do not condone copying the intellectual property of competitors; however, checking out their branding can be a great way to draw inspiration. Look at what works for your competitors—and what doesn't. What colour schemes do you like? Is there common imagery used? Do words or illustrations work better? What message is being conveyed? And will your logo "stand out"?

    Choose a style.

When creating the logo for your company, consider the tone of your branding. Consistency is key when it comes to branding, as this helps create brand loyalty and makes you easily identifiable. Do you want your logo to be modern and simplistic? Or does a retro vibe suit your brand more? Wacky and fun designs may be more eye-catching, but do they match your brand identity?

    Communicate your ideas thoroughly.

Not all of us are blessed with the skill of design, which means when creating a logo, a lot of people will opt to hire or work alongside a designer. There is an abundance of brilliant and hardworking designers available; however, their talents do not extend as far as mind reading.

Be clear and concise when communicating your ideas to your designers, as this will not only help them to bring your vision to life but can also save you time and money when being charged at an hourly rate!
